How to Begin a Personal Sculpture Collection
A thoughtful approach to choosing sculpture for a private collection: start with attention, ask practical questions and buy what continues to hold your gaze.

Begin with attention, not a category
A personal sculpture collection does not need a theme at the beginning. Start by noticing which forms continue to hold your attention after the first impression: a face, an animal, a fragment, a religious image or an abstract silhouette. Repeated attention is more useful than trying to follow a trend.
Ask practical questions
Before acquiring a work, confirm its materials, dimensions, weight, finish and method of installation. Ask whether it is unique or part of an edition, who made and finished it, and what care it requires. For online purchases, look for several clear photographs showing the front, profile, surface and scale.
Consider the room without buying for the room alone
A sculpture should live well in its intended place, but it should also remain meaningful if the room changes. Measure carefully, consider the available light and leave enough space to see the work from more than one angle.
The Sculpture Bay approach to collecting
Alongside making original work, the artist behind Sculpture Bay professionally selects and acquires distinctive objects of artistic value. The private collection is guided by craftsmanship, presence and the ability of an object to reward close looking. Selected pieces may occasionally be offered for sale.
A collection becomes personal through time. It can combine contemporary work, older objects and different materials, provided each acquisition has a clear reason for being there. The best next piece is not necessarily the one that matches. It is the one you will continue to notice.
